The center of everything. Taos Plaza has been the heart of trade and gathering since the King of Spain issued the Don Fernando de Taos land grant to 63 families in 1796. Gift shops, local goods, and specialty stores ring the square today, all walkable in a few minutes.
Taos Plaza sits inside the Taos Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Most of the storefronts ringing the square today were rebuilt in the 1930s, after fire swept through the connected adobe buildings, but the plaza itself has functioned as the town's center of trade and community for two centuries. A second, smaller square just south, often called McCarthy Plaza, holds a few more shops worth a look. Parking is metered around the square.

The Plaza connects directly to two other HeyTaos shopping districts. Bent Street and the John Dunn Shops sit one block north, a pedestrian courtyard of boutiques and cafes. Kit Carson Road runs east, home to the highest concentration of fine art galleries in town. Ledoux Street, one block southwest, holds the Harwood Museum and the Blumenschein Home, a cultural walk rather than a shopping stop.
