Each Pueblo produces pottery with a distinct character tied to its local clay, firing methods, and design traditions. Taos Pueblo and Picuris are known for micaceous pottery fired with mica-bearing clay that gives finished pieces a characteristic gold shimmer. San Ildefonso is associated with the polished black-on-black ware made famous by Maria Martinez in the early 20th century. Acoma produces fine-walled white clay pieces with intricate geometric designs.
Buying directly from potters at Taos Pueblo during visitor hours is the best option for micaceous pottery. The Millicent Rogers Museum shop carries authenticated Pueblo pottery from multiple Pueblos. Always ask about the maker and their Pueblo affiliation when buying from a retail setting.
Studio Ceramics
Taos has a community of studio potters working outside the Pueblo tradition in wood-fired stoneware, soda-fired work, and contemporary ceramics. Several operate studios in and around town and sell directly. The Taos Studio Tour in fall opens studios to the public. Gallery shops and some of the gift shops carry contemporary studio ceramics alongside Pueblo work.
