The textile tradition in northern New Mexico runs from historic Navajo weaving to contemporary Rio Grande-style blankets and Chimayo weavings. Chimayo, 60 miles south on the High Road, is the center of the Rio Grande weaving tradition. The Ortega and Trujillo families have been weaving there for generations and sell directly from their shops. Taos carries Chimayo work in several galleries and specialty shops.

Navajo rugs and blankets are available from antique dealers and galleries. Authentic historic Navajo weavings are collector pieces with significant prices. Contemporary Navajo-style weavings vary widely in origin. Always ask about the maker and method.

Home Goods

Taos has a concentration of home goods shops selling Southwestern-influenced pieces: hand-thrown pottery for the table, locally made candles, woven placemats and table runners, carved wooden items, tinwork, and painted furniture in the New Mexico tradition. The better shops are concentrated around the Plaza and on Bent Street.

Taos Furniture and Interior Design shops line the main commercial roads and stock pieces in the New Mexico adobe style: heavy carved wood, leather, and hand-forged iron. These are available if you are furnishing a house or vacation property.
