- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the VIN, stock number, mileage, trim, options, title status, and whether it is new, used, demonstrator, rental, or program inventory.
- Get the out-the-door price in writing. Separate vehicle price, taxes, title and registration charges, dealer fees, add-ons, service contracts, and financing costs.
- Review the Buyers Guide on a used vehicle. The FTC requires dealers to display it. It states whether the vehicle is sold with a warranty or as is. Keep the final copy.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Ask whether your mechanic may inspect the vehicle on or off the lot before purchase. A history report does not replace a mechanical inspection.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lookup and ask how open recalls will be handled.
- Finalize financing before surrendering a trade-in. Read every contingency. Get all promises, rates, terms, warranties, repairs, and cancellation conditions in the signed documents.
