Rafting the Rio Grande Near Taos
The Taos Box is Class IV to V whitewater through the Rio Grande Gorge and the most popular full-day adventure trip in New Mexico. Float trips on calmer sections are available for all ages. The season runs spring through fall.
The Taos Box
The Taos Box is a 17-mile stretch of the Rio Grande running through the deepest section of the Rio Grande Gorge, from the John Dunn Bridge to Arroyo Hondo. It is Class III to V whitewater, with the most serious rapids in the upper section. The Box takes a full day. Outfitters typically launch at 8 to 9 AM and finish in the early afternoon.
The scenery is as significant as the whitewater. The gorge walls rise up to 800 feet above the river. Bighorn sheep are common on the canyon walls. The trip is remote enough that there is no road access for the full length of the run.

Season and Water Flow
The Rio Grande rafting season near Taos runs approximately April through September. Peak flow is during snowmelt in May and June, when the river is highest and the whitewater most intense. The Box is at its most serious during peak flow. Some outfitters restrict access or increase age/experience requirements during very high water.
By mid-summer the river drops and the Box becomes more manageable, though still Class III to IV in the technical sections. Fall water levels are lower and the season ends when water becomes too cold for comfortable rafting, typically October.
Water temperature in the Rio Grande can be cold even in summer, especially during snowmelt season. Outfitters provide wetsuits when conditions warrant them. Follow their guidance.
