Kit Carson Internet, the broadband division of Kit Carson Electric Cooperative, is the dominant provider here, and its fiber buildout is more extensive than its small-town reputation suggests. The cooperative reports direct fiber covering roughly 2,951 square miles across 29 communities in Taos, Colfax, and Rio Arriba counties, serving nearly 20,500 households and 3,600 businesses, built originally through federal infrastructure grants and expanded steadily since. Effective April 1, 2026, Kit Carson restructured its pricing and speeds: many existing service tiers had their speeds doubled at no added cost, and new residential packages start at $30 a month, alongside expanded gigabit options for businesses and new VoIP phone service. The cooperative has also implemented direct peering with major traffic sources like Netflix and Google to improve speed and reliability.

TAOSNET is the other named local provider, delivering fixed wireless rather than fiber across its own coverage footprint. Fixed wireless can be a genuinely solid option in line-of-sight locations but is more sensitive to terrain and weather than a fiber connection.

Kit Carson Electric Cooperative, founded in 1944 and the second-largest member-owned electric cooperative in New Mexico, supplies electricity across Taos, Colfax, and Rio Arriba counties, and is itself one of several propane providers in the area alongside Northern New Mexico Gas, Kit Carson Propane, and Pendleton Propane. Many rural and older properties in the county heat with propane rather than natural gas, and a propane tank refill is a real, recurring winter expense worth budgeting for, not an occasional top-up. New Mexico Gas Company provides piped natural gas service to parts of the Town of Taos and is actively extending a gas line toward Taos Ski Valley, so natural gas access is expanding but still geographically limited outside town.

Whether you are on municipal water or a private well depends entirely on where in the county you land. The Town of Taos operates its own water and wastewater system, billed through the Town's Utility Billing office, serving the Town of Taos, Taos Pueblo, El Valle de Los Ranchos, and El Prado, a combined service population in the range of 10,000 residents. Outside that municipal service area, in much of the rest of the county, properties run on private wells and septic systems, which are the homeowner's responsibility to maintain rather than a utility's. Residential and business curbside trash pickup is not part of the Town of Taos's own utility services. It is handled through a private contractor, Waste Management, which residents and businesses arrange and pay for directly. Outside town, trash service is even less of a given, and some rural county residents haul their own waste to a transfer station rather than relying on curbside pickup at all.

A real, locally-owned alternative now exists for exactly that gap: Trash Burro, launched in 2025 and operating under a franchise agreement with Taos County, offers weekly concierge trash and recycling pickup, meaning you do not have to roll your bin to the road, originally built to serve El Prado, Arroyo Hondo, Valdez, Arroyo Seco, Des Montes, and Taos Ski Valley, areas that historically lacked easy access to curbside service. Confirm what trash arrangement, if any, comes with a specific property before assuming curbside pickup is included, and check both Waste Management and Trash Burro for current service availability at your address.

If you buy a rural property without an existing well, or your existing well needs major service, you need a state-licensed driller, not just a handyman with a rig. New Mexico law requires anyone drilling a water well to hold a valid license from the Office of the State Engineer, and it is illegal to drill without one. You can verify a specific driller's license status directly through the OSE's own driller license search at ose.nm.gov before hiring anyone, which is worth doing given how much a well costs to get wrong.

Several other well and pump service companies advertise in Taos County, including Cisneros Well Drilling Pump Sales & Service and Rocky Mountain Drilling Pump, but we could not independently confirm current contact details for every listing at the time of writing. Whichever company you consider, confirm their current OSE driller license directly, since the license, not the advertisement, is what actually protects you if something goes wrong.
