Millicent Rogers Museum

An accredited museum of Southwest art and culture, built from the personal collection of Millicent Rogers, a Standard Oil heiress, fashion icon, and jewelry designer who made Taos her home in 1947. Today the collection has grown to over 7,000 pieces of Native American, Hispanic, and contemporary art.

Millicent Rogers came to Taos in 1947, an heiress to the Standard Oil fortune through her grandfather Henry Huttleston Rogers, already known for her fashion sense and design work. She quietly played an instrumental role in securing the return of Blue Lake to Taos Pueblo, and built a deep collection of Native American and Hispanic jewelry, pottery, and textiles before her death in 1953.

Her son Paul Peralta-Ramos founded the museum in 1956 to house her collection, originally about 2,000 pieces. The museum moved to its current site in 1968, a home later remodeled and expanded by architect Nathaniel A. Owings. In the 1980s, it became the first cultural organization in New Mexico to offer a comprehensive Hispanic art collection. It is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
