Red River, New Mexico
A former gold and copper mining town on the Enchanted Circle, 40 miles northeast of Taos. Ski area in winter, trout fishing and hiking in summer, and one of the most intact small mountain towns in northern New Mexico.
The Town
Red River was founded in 1895 during a gold and copper mining boom in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The mines played out but the town survived, shifting to tourism in the 20th century. It sits at 8,750 feet in a narrow valley where the Red River runs through the center of town. Main Street has a dense cluster of restaurants, shops, and lodging that make it feel more like a resort village than most Enchanted Circle stops.
The character is family-friendly and unpretentious, less expensive than Taos Ski Valley in winter, and generally less crowded than Angel Fire. It draws a loyal repeat visitor base from Texas and Oklahoma.
Red River Ski Area
Red River Ski Area is a small, family-oriented mountain at the east end of Main Street. 58 trails, 1,600 acres, 1,600 feet of vertical. The terrain is beginner to intermediate-heavy. Lift ticket prices are substantially lower than Taos Ski Valley. The ski-in ski-out Main Street setup is genuinely convenient.

Summer in Red River
Summer is when Red River shows its other side. The Red River itself is a stocked trout fishery running right through town. New Mexico fishing license required. Fly fishing guides operate out of several shops on Main Street. The chairlift runs for summer mountain views. The Wheeler Peak Wilderness boundary is accessible by trail from the ski area, putting serious backcountry hiking within reach.
The Red River valley has OHV trails and forest roads popular with ATV riders in summer. The Enchanted Circle is at its best for driving from Memorial Day through October.
Where to Eat
Main Street has a dense concentration of restaurants for a town this size. Options include Texas-style barbecue, New Mexican food, pizza, and standard American diner fare. The Pioneer Bar and Grill is the most established option. Several places are seasonal and reduce hours or close in shoulder seasons. Confirm before making a restaurant the reason you drove to Red River.
Where to Stay
Red River has more lodging per capita than any other Enchanted Circle town. Options include ski-in ski-out condos on Main Street, small motels, cabin rentals, and vacation rental properties in the surrounding valley. Christmas and Presidents' Week book early. Summer weekends in July and August also fill up. Book ahead for either peak period.
Getting There
Red River is 40 miles northeast of Taos via NM-522 north through Questa, then NM-38 east up the canyon. Drive time is about 55 minutes without stops. The canyon road NM-38 between Questa and Red River is scenic and narrow. In winter, snow tires or all-wheel drive are strongly recommended. Check road conditions at nmroads.com before making the drive in storm conditions.
