Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire was the first memorial in the United States dedicated to veterans of the Vietnam War. It was built by Dr. Victor Westphall in 1971 in memory of his son David, a Marine officer killed in Vietnam in 1968. The white chapel sits on a hillside in the Moreno Valley with a dramatic view of the surrounding mountains.
The building is architecturally striking, a curving white concrete form that rises from the valley floor. The grounds include a visitor center with exhibits on the Vietnam War and its veterans. It is free to visit, open daily, and worth stopping for regardless of your connection to the subject.

Summer at Angel Fire
Angel Fire Resort operates a summer program with an 18-hole golf course, mountain bike trails with lift access, and disc golf. The Moreno Valley at 8,400 feet stays cool through summer and the resort draws families looking for a mountain escape from Texas heat. The Angel Fire Balloon Rally takes place each year in late summer. The valley views from the resort and from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial are outstanding in fall when the surrounding slopes show aspen color.
Where to Eat
Angel Fire has a small restaurant strip along the main road through the resort area. Options include the resort's on-mountain dining, a handful of independent restaurants, and limited fast food. The selection is notably thinner than Red River or Taos. Most restaurants are seasonal. Confirm hours before planning a meal stop.
Getting There
